Wow, I was tagged by The Gal Herself and it touches me that she thought of me. I hope you'll visit her, she'll already on my blogroll. (because I enjoy reading her)
THE "5 ME" MEME
List 5 things about yourself that you never have before.
1. I've spend 9 months in a foster center when I was 14 years old. And It was great, I felt safe there, I use to wish I hadn't left.
2. I'm an insomniac... I've always have trouble sleeping, for as long as I can remember. But I don't fight it anymore.
3. I believe in telling people how much they mean to me and how important they are on a daily basis. Seize the day, be thankful. Let people know you love them, how much you feel blessed to have them in your life.
4. I was a self injurer for close to 12 years. I use to cut myself daily, up until one day something happened ( February 2004) and I realised I wanted to live, I loved myself and then, things started to change. I'm not ashamed of my scars, they are part of who I AM. I don't love them but they are a mark left by the pain I was going through.
5. I'll be celebrating the 7th anniversary of my baptism in about a month. Confirmation's been 2 years.
About self injury, there's resources available online and IRL. If someone you knows SI, talk to them, do not hesitate, let them know how you feel, how you care. Someone really close to my heart bought me the "Understanding Selfinjury the Workbook" . I translated it in french for people here who have no resources. As a former cutter, I'm telling you, there's hope. People can help, people can be happy.

Thanks for sharing! I will put mine out later today or tomorrow!
No problem my dear Toni!!!!
Looking forward to yours! :)
Boy, am I ever glad I tagged you! You're not only interesting, you're very sensitive, which is why I'm glad I got the links on self-abuse from you. I trust your judgement. My 19-year-old niece is a cutter and my mother (her grandmother) is worried sick and is looking for ways to help her. I can't wait to share some of this with her. Thank you, thank you. Your unflinching honesty in sharing this will open an avenue of conversation for my niece.
If you can buy her the book, DO IT right now. It helped me a lot (Understanding Selfinjury the Workbook by PAAR Pittsburg Action Against Rape)
I would be open to email, discuss with your mom or you if needed. Selfinjury is a terrible selfdestructive behavior, I found the craziest ways to destroy myself for 12 years because I could JUST not deal with myself, with the past.
I have talked a lot this summer about my SI, most people are uncomfortable even asking me "Hey girl, what are these scars" because they are visible but people fear making us uncomfortable. Ask, say something, buy a book, express your concern. If the person's scars are visibles, she is in a way opening a door, even if it's small to say " I cut myself, or for me now it's more of "Yes, I used to cut"....
There's hope for your niece, there is hope to help all of you who are surrounding her but the real "click" is that she'll have to decide to stop destroying herself and Yes to loving herself.
It took therapy, lots of love and support by friends, an awesome doctor that I adore, it took the WILL to want to change. In my case it took some terrible event on a fucking febuary morning for me to say " What the fuck? What am I doing to myself? I'll be abused and used as long as I'll destroy myself, I love myself, I want to be alive. And came a lot of mourning, grieving on those years that had passed....
It's a journey that makes us stronger human being.
My email addy is thenononsense@gmail.com
Email me, I'm here to help. My heart breaks for everyone who does this because I know the pain...
I'm glad you tagged me, God's ways are mysterious eh? :)
Many hugs!!!!
This is unbelievably generous of you. Thank you! I'll pass all of this onto my mother. Just because we may not take you up on it doesn't mean it wasn't an important offer. My mother is an old lady of another generation. It's possible that she just won't want to discuss any of this with strangers. As a matter of fact, my mother's first impulse is to not discuss any of this at all! It's a sign of how serious this is that it's being discussed at all.
One thing for sure, I'm ordering the book and printing out information from the SAFE website. Knowledge is power, and thanks to you we'll be better informed. That's a start, and no small contribution on your part.
If only we could get through to my niece's mother, my older sister. She's a control freak who simply does not listen to her daughter. My niece's rage is encompassing. From what I've read in the information you steered me to, none of this is unusual, is it?
I understand about women of her generations, I totally do.
I'm glad you are ordering the book and printing information from S.A.F.E. I'll keep you all in my prayers.
As for your niece's mom, nope, that type of attitude is not unusual coming from a relative of the cutter. :(
If you need anything in the weeks, months to come, email me or post here, I'll try my best to share about my journey and what helped me.
Thanks for sharing!
Hi!
I'm just catching up on my comments and I noticed you tagged me -- ! I'll answer and I've added you on my blog roll too!
Your list was heartbreaking, yet so amazing because you are writing as a survivor, not a victim. That is a wonderful thing to pass on --
take care!
@Lara
